This workshop invites participants to explore and appreciate the Lewers garden and buildings through the creation of a handmade artist book.
Participants will work with ink drawing and intaglio printmaking, using recycled materials such as tetra packs and juice bottle matrixes. The workshop will introduce sustainable printmaking practices, combining drawing and experimentation, and artist book construction.
The session will conclude with a group display of the artist books, providing an opportunity to share outcomes, reflect on the creative process, and enjoy afternoon tea together.
No prior printmaking experience is required. All materials will be provided.

Freedom Wilson’s printmaking practice is shaped by working on location, using investigative drawing to research the ecological complexities of wild Australian landscapes (plantscapes). Her work focuses on symbiotic relationships and is informed by a deep love of the natural environment and of drawing.
By hiking to remote locations with pencil and paper and magnifying the small, wondrous details of plant communities, her work intersects contemporary printmaking and ecological research. Habitat drawings and detailed plant survey drawings create the foundation for her printmaking practice.
By transforming tiny plant drawings into macro, hero-like silkscreen prints, she emphasises the importance of plant relationships functioning at a micro level when considering the magnificent Australian landscape. She hopes to encourage Australians to venture further into the wilderness and to look closely at the micro-worlds within. Her printmaking practice draws attention to the significance of small yet highly complex plant and fungal relationships, which together make up what remains of Australia’s magnificent wilderness.
Wilson’s printmaking process and methodology have become a study of sustainability, the natural environment, and conversations around its preservation.
She exhibits regularly in group and solo exhibitions and values opportunities that open conversations about sustainability and conservation, fostering a deeper knowledge of and passion for vegetation.
