Stitched Landscape Brooch

Adult Workshop with Pippita Bennett

Set in the Penrith Regional Gallery studios, join artist Pippita Bennett to explore the textile medium. Make your own bespoke textile brooch from hand-dyed fabric utilising a range of stitching techniques. In the workshop learn a variety of stitches and leave with your own sample swatch for future reference. Pippita will show you how to nourish your practice through creative mindfulness.

Pippita Bennett lives and works on Dharug and Gundungurra Country in Katoomba. She creates stitched landscapes of places she lives in and visits. She gathers bark, leaves and flowers from these places to dye the threads and textiles she works with, gathering added inspiration from thrifted materials. Her dyed fabrics are soaked with the memory of the place they were dyed: similarly thrifted fabric holds memory of its past use. Pippita works wherever she finds herself: at home, in wild landscapes, in cars or trains; allowing her needle to trace the line of a branch, rock or simply follow a thought. Stitches are her words: a journal of place and time, where memories and images overlay each other as a landscape of life. Pippita has been a finalist in the Stanthorpe Art prize (2024), the Fisher Ghost Art Award (2023) and the Regional Landscape prize (2022 and 2024). She has had solo exhibitions at Scratch Art Space and exhibits regularly at the Corner Store Gallery in Orange. Pippita studied art at the Tin Sheds as part of her architecture degree at the University of Sydney. She then worked as a primary school teacher in Steiner school, where art making was central to the teaching practice. She is currently studying a Master of Art Therapy. Pippita is happiest with stitching in hand, a dog in her lap and cup of tea beside her.
