Rochelle Summerfield: A Wayfarer on the Nepean
Featuring drawing and animation works resulting from the artist’s recent Summer Studio Residency at Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest
Autumn Exhibition Suite 2017
Rochelle Summerfield examines female experience and our human need for connection to nature through her work, which explores the rich riverscapes of her local area – the Clarence River in rural Grafton, north-eastern New South Wales. While in residence at Penrith she considered the Nepean as a riverscape – a cultured and gendered space – all with a darkly humourous nod and a wink.
Working between classic media such as drawing and collage; and new technologies including photography and digital media, Summerfield irreverently reinvents her landscapes in a decidedly contemporary, Australian and female character.
